You want to know why they’re less likely than 2NE1 to succeed in America?
1. SNSD has nine members. Most Americans will have a hard time telling them apart (as any think “all Asians look alike”), especially since their stage outfits are usually identical. SNSD has the “triplets”, whereas 2NE1’s members are all easily identifiable. Americans don’t want to have to memorize nine names. There’s a reason one-person acts (Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga) are so popular here; there’s one name, one face, something distinctive about them.
2. SNSD is Kpop; 2NE1 is Korean American pop. What I mean by that is SNSD’s music has that unique Kpop sound, whereas 2NE1’s could be American pop if it was in English. (Yes, I know they do have songs in English…) Americans don’t want something different, they want something familiar.
As a SONE, I’m comfortable with admitting that 2NE1 has the upper hand when it comes to America.
